CBT for depression entails recognising and addressing untrustworthy thinking associated with depressive sensitivity (cognitive restructuring), assisting patients in engaging in pleasurable behaviours more often (behavioural activation), and improving problem-solving skills. The first of these elements, cognitive restructuring, entails collaboration between the patient and the expert in order to identify and correct habitual thought mistakes linked to depression. Patients who are depressed often have distorted self-perceptions. To counter these skewed feelings, messages from the patient’s present experience, past history, and future prospects are used. In addition to self-critical feelings, patients with depression often limit behaviours that have the potential to be fun because they believe they would not be worth their time and effort. Unfortunately, this generally contributes to a deplorable spiral, in which a depressed mood leads to less activity, which leads to even more depressed mood, and so on.
